Frequently Asked Questions

1. Does the program fee include all the material cost?

Generally yes, with the occasional exceptions for classes such as Robotic Design Studio. Please refer to our website for detailed information.

2. What language does Science Workshop® use?

All classes are taught in English.

3. What if my child doesn’t understand English?

Students need to be able to communicate in English.

Our programs are very hands-on rather than lecturing and talking is an important part of learning.

4. Are the teachers native English speakers?

Not all teachers are native English speakers but they are all fluent in English.

Our teaching team is comprised of teachers from different countries. They all speak fluent English and hold Bachelor and/or Master Degrees in Science or Education.

5. How many students in one class versus how many teachers?

Our in-house classes consist of around 6 students to a maximum of 12 students and generally maintain a teacher to student ratio of 1:6.

6. Are there any discounts?

For SW in-house programs, we do not offer any discount.

7. Is there any certificate after completion of the program?

Yes, Certificate of Completion is issued at the end of each term when the student has attended at least 80% of the classes.

8. Does each student have his or her own set of experiment?

In most cases, students will have their own set of experiments. From time to time, students are asked to work in small teams of 2 or 3, if the facilitator judges that it is more effective for students to collaborate in more complex activities.

9. Can students take home their final products/experiments?

If there is a final product, then yes, the students will be encouraged to bring their products home. However, experiments do not always result in a final product in the form of a physical object, and formal lab reports are beyond the cognitive scope of young students. In that case, we may ask students to bring home worksheets that they can share with their parents.

10. If my child is sick, is there any refund or make-up class?

Make-up class can be arranged subject to availability. Please contact our Administrative Managers for enquiry and arrangement.

11. Are parents or helpers allowed to stay with the children?

With the exception of our Tots classes, we do not allow parents or helpers in the classrooms. A child who is not ready to stay in a learning group without the company of a parent or helper may not benefit from our classes. The presence of a parent or helper would also affect the dynamics of the class and other children’s learning.

If a child seems uneasy to be separated from his or her caretaker, we will allow the caretaker to stay for a maximum of 5 minutes at the beginning of the class.

12. Are students from local schools or international schools?

In general, 60% of SW in-house students are from International school, 40% from local schools. Only in rare exceptions, our students normally communicate in English.

13. Are there any field trips? Can parents go?

We have fieldtrips for our in-house programs. However, parents, helpers, and non-SW students are not invited to participate in the field trip. Science Workshop® will provide adequate chaperones, and children’s safety is our top priority.

14. Is there any information for parents so that they can know what their children have learned in class?

Yes, we will provide information to parents in the form of Topic Overviews which is posted on our website.

15. Do children need to bring aprons or lab coats?

All of our science students are required to purchase and wear a Science Workshop lab coat to class.

16. How do I enroll?

Enrollment can be arranged by submitting the enrollment application, which is contained in the Science Workshop® brochure. Parents can also enroll online in Science Workshop’s website, as well as contacting our Administrative Managers for assistance.
