Terrific Teeth

Find out about toothpaste and how to keep teeth strong and healthy.
Challenge 1 - Making and Testing Toothpaste
  • Make and test your own toothpaste.
Challenge 2 - Buy Them and Try Them
  • Find out more about different brands of toothpaste.  Do they work as well as your homemade toothpaste?  Do a survey to find out people’s favorite toothpaste.
Challenge 3 - The Mystery of the Colorado Brown Stain
  • Find out more about some very important scientific research.  Make decisions about the different ideas that people might have.  Write a script for a TV program.

  • What are some tooth traditions from different cultures?

Challenge 1 – A Sticky Problem

  • Find out more about some very important scientific inventions. Use your scientific imagination to put these sticky mixtures to good use.
Challenge 3 – There a Hole in My Bucket
  • Test different sticky materials to try to stop a leak in a bucket.  You might even write a new song about it.

Find out more about our nation’s favorite drink and how people from around the world create the perfect cup.
Challenge 1 – Testing and Comparing Tea
  • Test and compare different types of tea.  Host a tea party and do a survey to find out people’s favorite tea.
Challenge 2 – Just My Cup of Tea
  • Find out more about different tea cups.  Do all cup and mugs work in the same way?  Are different cups suited to different purposes?
Challenge 3 – How Do You Drink Yours?
  • Carry out your own scientific research.  Decide how to present the information you have gathered.
Extra Challenges:
  • Investigate different kinds of tea bags.
  • Does the shape or size of a teapot affect the quality of the brew?
  • Does a china teapot make a better cup of tea than a metal one?

Frank's Fascinating Food

Meet Frank who works as a chemist.  He thinks a little bit of chemistry will help his cousins, Orion and Andromeda, to learn about food.  You can help him.
Challenge 1 – Get Set Jellies
  • Andromeda and Orion have made a jelly with pineapple chunks in it for Frank.  But there’s a problem.  You can help Frank to work out what has happened.
Challenge 2 – Surprising Stains
  • Andromeda and Orion have got blackberry stains on their tee shirts.  You can use a little bit of chemistry to explain what happens when they try to remove the stains.
Challenge 3 – Cheesy Challenge
  • Explore how a little bit of chemistry helps to turn milk into cheese.  Find out more about lots of food made from milk.

  • Investigate how yeast and baking powder help bread and cakes rise.
  • Find out how mixing ice and salt together ca help you to make ice cream.

  • Your investigations will help you to decide whether dinosaurs were warm or cold-blooded.
Challenge 2 – Fossil Folly!
  • You can investigate why dinosaurs come in different shapes and sizes.
Challenge 3 – Disappearing Dinosaurs
  • Decide what the best theory for why dinosaurs became extinct is.

  • Decide when you will do your activity, who will take part, which activity to do, what help will the students need and what resources you will need.
Challenge 2 – Brilliant Bubbles
  • Investigate different ways to blow a bubble and how to do it in a safe way.  Find way to blow different bubbles.  Record what you have found out about blowing bubbles.
