About this Program:
In this program, your children will get the inside scoop on how to solve problems in a fun and hands-on manner. Not only will they be able to strengthen their core mathematics skills, they will also learn how to tackle international mathematical competition problems and US standardized tests such as SCAT, SSAT and SAT.
Our Academic Team:
We have a very strong academic team. Our instructors have extensive mathematics background, including the Head Math Teacher of one of Hong Kong's prestigious band one school, a very experienced certified mathematics specialist for US elementary schools and longtime mathematical competition coaches. All of them will have continuous mentoring from Dr. Feng and the team from Idea Math.
Our Classroom Practice:
During our classes, we will help students develop systematic methods for problem-solving rather than memorizing formulas. They will learn the structures behind mathematical questions rather than by mechanically practicing problems over and over again. Ultimately, we want your children to develop strategies for exploring problems in order to understand the structure behind them. With a better understanding of each topic, coupled with added confidence, they will be able to formulate their own strategy and shortcut for each problem. This insight into the problem will make it far easier for students to complete a problem quickly and accurately.
With engaging and hands-on teaching style, our courses will combine lectures with problem-solving practices. The classes weave together knowledge, skills and techniques useful for all levels of mathematical understanding and competitions. There will be games and hands-on activities that will give your children good insights into each topic. They will also be able to participate at the classroom board to explain their strategies to the class. We will also encourage discussions and exchange of ideas to stimulate thoughts on the subject.

Solving mathematical contest problems provides a glimpse into the world of mathematics not afforded by the usual school curricula. Our goal is to help your children build a solid foundation for their future academic studies. Our mission is to give them an opportunity to learn more concepts and acquire strategies, hone their skills and seek connections beyond mathematics.
Certificate, Assessment and Award:
All participants will be issued a certificate and a written report.
Placement Test:
It is important that students are placed in the correct level to maximize their learning and to build up their confidence. Placement will be determined by the Placement Test which is available upon payment of the course. The test should be taken by the student WITHOUT assistance. All of our students tested will be put into levels that Dr. Zuming Feng will personally assign. We will arrange with Canadian International School to coordinate the test.
Levels:
We do not teach the traditional way where students learn mathematics one topic at a time. All our problems are connected and that is why our levels are not based on grades or ages but on the abilities of the students. Each of our problems encompasses multiple mathematic strands. Students will use their knowledge of different strands already taught in school to solve multi-faceted problems. Students who are more advanced in their understanding and knowledge will be challenged and stretched to come up with alternative and more sophisticated solutions to each problem. This way of teaching will let the students find out for themselves the quickest and most accurate way of solving a problem.
