Intelligent Home

What does an “intelligent” home really mean?  Delve into technological designs to upgrade your home with our multimedia technology systems.  Can you figure out how to “wire” yourself up to the rest of the world?  Discover how to craft smart machines that are sustainable by and blend in with the environment.  The best is for last as you can transform into a city planner to found a new metropolis where human, nature and robots exists in harmony.  It’s the “intelligence” that counts!

During the five days, you will design and build an intelligent living space that reacts and coexists with the surroundings and program sustainability-themed games.  LEGO and RCX/Cricket will be used as the main medium.  Creations will be available for display and to play with at the end of the course!  On Day One, you will design and construct innovative home devices that are used daily with LEGO and K’NEX.  Following this, you will add mechanical and multimedia interaction components via RCX and Pico Cricket programming.   On the third day, you will design and build a comfortable living space that will interact with the surroundings and minimizes the impact to the environment.  The next day will bring you to our game design workshop where you will devise, program and play sustainability themed games.  Last but not least, you will refine your devices and/or games with advanced functions.

究竟一所有「智慧」的家是怎樣的？透過我們的多媒體系統，來研究如何運用科技設計為你的家居升級。你知道你與世界之間是怎樣連「線」的嗎？一起探索製造環保又能與大自然融合的機器的方法吧。最好玩的是，在這個課程中，你能化身成城市規劃者，設計一個人類，大自然和機械能夠和諧並存的都市。「智慧」就是一切！

在這五天裡，你會設計和建造一個有互動功能，能與大自然並存，具有智能的生活空間，並設計一些以保育為主題的遊戲程式。LEGO，RCX/Cricket微型電腦會是主要的器材。這些新發明會在課程的尾聲被展覽及分享！課程的第一天，你們會首先用LEGO和K’NEX來設計及構造一些新穎的日常家居設備。然後，利用RCX和 PicoCricket程式，為它們添加機械和多媒體的部份。第三天，你們會設計和建造一個舒適和互動的生活空間，並盡量降低它對環境的影響。之後，你們會在遊戲設計工作室裡發明，設計再運用電腦程式來完成一些以保育為主題的遊戲。最後你們會有機會加以改良新發明的設備和程式。

Pharaoh’s Tomb

Did you know that an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 workers built the Pyramids at Giza thousands of years ago?  What kind of traps do you construct to safeguard the riches in the tomb?  Can you design a labyrinth that treasure hunters will be sure to get lost in?  Strategize a plan to hide different kinds of traps inside your most difficult of mazes.  Are you confident that even Indiana Jones will not be able to solve this gigantic puzzle?

During this week, you will design and build various kinds of traps for a labyrinth using different recycled materials.  Your creations will be available for display and to play with at the end of the course.  On day one, you will study the design of plethora of common trap triggers.  You will then build you own trap trigger to drop the water bottle!  Day two will be devoted to the study of the physics behind common traps.  You will learn the basic skills of trap making and design a basic hunting trap. Following this, you will explore various classic traps and devise your own modern day replica!  The rest of the day will be devoted to testing out and refining each others designs. On the following day, you will tinker with traps and alarms that exist in modern times.  Your challenge today will be to build a trap of your own design.  On day five and beyond, you will improve and refine your device, modifying them to suit your different needs.  Your creations will be available for display and to play with at the end of the course!

你 知不知道約有20，000到30，000位工人曾經參與幾千年前的吉薩金字塔工程？你又會建造一些怎樣的機關來保護墓穴裡的寶物呢？你能設計出一個肯定令 奪寶者們迷失方向的迷宮嗎？來策劃怎樣把一系列的機關埋藏在迷宮裡面吧。你有信心令奪寶奇兵也無法走出這個龐大的迷陣嗎？

這個星期，你們 會用不同的再造物料，為迷宮設計和建造各式各樣的機關。這些新發明會在課程的尾聲被展覽及分享。課程的第一天，你們會首先學習多種常見機關的結構，然後動 手建造一個能困住水樽的陷阱！第二天主要學習各種常見機關背後的物理理論。你們亦會學到建造陷阱的基本技術，和設計一個簡單的狩獵陷阱。下一步就是研究各 種經典機關，再設計出一個現代版本！你們亦會有機會測試及改良彼此的設計。之後一天，你們會為自己的陷阱加添現代機關和警鐘。今天的主要任務是建造一個自 己設計的機關。第五天以後，你們會改良自己的裝置，並跟據需要作出修改。這些新發明會在課程的尾聲被展覽及分享！
